#SelfTapesMatter

Here at the AR513 Studio, we pride ourselves on delivering SOLID self tapes that casting directors (and agents!) LOVE! And because we’re professional, working actors, we know what casting directors want. So, let’s get straight to it, shall we?!

What is MOST important when it comes to self taping? EVERYTHING! But, lighting and sound are probably of the utmost importance in your self tape. Why? If they can’t HEAR or SEE you loud and clear, they’re not wasting their time watching your audition, plain and simple. Below are a few key pointers, a link to sign up for our virtual SELF TAPE/AUDITION course (HIGHLY recommend), and a PDF to get you up and running on your self taping studio!

  • Background should be clear of all distractions, a solid color that helps you stand out (we love blue, gray, white backdrops, but always check with the casting notes to make sure they haven’t requested anything more specific)!

  • If you live in a loud, noisy area, we suggest investing in a directional microphone to minimize background noise and keep your audio clear and focused. If you have munchkins or roommates running around, see if you can’t bribe them to play outside in the scorching sun for a few minutes, or 30… OR book the studio! We’re always here to help!

  • Framing is VERY important - pay attention to how casting has requested you frame your takes. Slates are usually always CLOSE-UPS unless otherwise directed. Scenes are medium-closeups or closeups. Use your best judgment, but remember, casting wants to see your face and the emotion behind your eyes. This isn’t theatre, it’s nuanced on-camera work that will book you the job.

  • Play your eyeline a few inches off camera. Unless you’re doing a spokesperson/hosting audition, you’ll usually NEVER look directly into camera for your audition. Slates should always be done TO CAMERA. And remember, your slate is your introduction to casting; you only get one chance to make a first impression.

  • Dress with an idea of your character. Don’t box yourself in with full blown costume effects, but give casting an idea of what they may be missing.

  • And ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS, do your best to be OFF-BOOK!! This means MEMORIZED. Know your lines and know what you’re saying. You are a living, breathing human (or so we hope), and you have a message to convey. What is it? And why does it matter? You have to figure that out, or book one of our many talented coaches and we can get you right for your next big audition!

Might we suggest signing up for our next virtual on-camera auditioning course? Check it out in our classes page at the top! And, a gift for you- a PDF informational about self taping and all that jazz!! Just CLICK HERE!

And as always, THANK YOU for being one of our valued clients and actors! We love seeing you all thrive and are grateful to be a part of your journey!
